First records of Pacific sand lance in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago

Rapid warming of the global ocean has major consequences on the distribution of marine organisms, and several species of Pacific and Atlantic origin can now be found into the Arctic Ocean. In a previous study, we showed that Pacific sand lance recently established into the Beaufort Sea. In a freshly-published follow-up study, we show that the species is rapidly expanding its range eastwards into the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, which could have major impacts on trophic pathways within the pelagic ecosystem of Arctic coastal areas. Detection of the species was based on an original mix of ichthyoplankton surveys, genomics and Inuit tratitional knowledge. Congratulations to my former MSc student Marianne Falardeau for leading such an interesting piece of work. Enjoy your read!
