Fisheries and Oceans to fund an extended survey for the Newfoundland capelin stock
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada is investing to increase survey effort of the Newfoundland capelin population, considered a keystone species in the marine ecosystem of the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland. Recovery rate predictions for groundfish stocks are intimately linked to capelin stock dynamics, so new information generated by an improved survey will benefit management of key fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador.
